The 50 4th Street Studio Residency is designed to provide emerging and underrepresented Capital Region artists with space and community to develop new work. Located in the former Union Bank in downtown Troy, NY, the urban studio residency program is open to the public and embeds artists in their community while providing them with no-cost studio space. Six artists will be selected for each 3-month residency session, during which they will have 24-hour access to large shared studio spaces with natural lighting in the heart of downtown Troy.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed for the first session (June- August) on May 28th, 2024. Reviews for the second session will be held on July 11th.

In exchange for free studio space, artists will be asked to welcome the public into the gallery space during open hours, as well as participate in potential public events such as open studios and Troy Night Out events. Each artist will be responsible for gallery sitting for 2.5 hours a week during their residency.

Our goal is to provide space and access for all, regardless of differences of race, age, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, national origin, migratory status, disability/abilities, political affiliation, veteran status and/or socioeconomic background.

About Collar Works

Collar Works is a nonprofit contemporary art space located in Troy, New York. Our mission is to support emerging, underrepresented artists and curators working in any media, creating provocative and culturally relevant artworks as a way of enriching the cultural life of the region. Collar Works provides a venue for community dialogue focused on serious and spirited artworks, educating the public through exhibitions, gallery talks, lectures, workshops, residencies, and community outreach activities.

Restrictions:

Residents cannot use any of the following mediums, equipment, or processes: ​​

Any chemicals, liquids, or materials with a flashpoint of 100 degrees Farenheit or lower, Aerosols of any kind, including spray paint, spray glue, and spray fixative, Acetone, Acids, Aromatic epoxies and aromatic epoxy paints, Bondo and similar fillers, Benzene (found in some solvents, paints, and  thinners), Asbestos laden stone (such as some alabasters and  soapstone), Candles, incense, or anything with an open flame, Toluene, xylene, and/or industrial paint thinners, Fiberglass, Kerosene, petroleum, gasoline, Turpentine, Turpenoid, Oil paints, Contact cement (except water-based), Mineral Spirits, Hazardous pigments, Any process which creates hazardous or noxious  fumes, Spray painting and spraying aerosols of any kind, Welding, Brazing or burning, Drycarving/rasping/sanding which creates  excessive amounts of airborne particles, Encaustic, Hotplates, hotpots, and hot-knives, Kilns, Propane or butane torches, Pneumatic tools, Incandescent, Halogen, Neolite or Purelite lights or other high-temperature light bulbs.
